Proteas Proteas are shrubs from southern Africa with spectacular blooms. What looks like a single flower is actually an inflorescence composed of many small flowers that attract different animals such as insects, birds and even rodents. The inflorescences remain open for many weeks, making the plant a popular picking flower. The leaves are tough and leathery as an adaptation to dry environments.
