The Cactus Family The cacti (family Cactaceae) originate in the Americas. These are special plants of primarily dry habitats that store water in their stems and may protect themselves with many thorns. The storage of water allows them to survive periods of drought and also to dilute toxic acids and salts that are formed in their bodies. Impressive flowers bloom from the clumsy-looking plant for a short period of time, and insects and birds may nest in their stems.
