Afterglow

During a six-month artist residency, the first of its kind at the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens, Tel Aviv-based artist Diana Gilon transformed the gallery adjacent to the Tropical Conservatory into both an artist's studio and a space for dialogue. Visitors and staff have been invited to step inside, engage with her process, and offer their perspectives, enriching her experience of the gardens through the eyes of local communities and international guests.
Gilon’s artistic practice is an evolving exploration of wildness, spontaneity, and strangeness. Initially, she began by drawing from photographs she took in the gardens, then transitioned to sketching and painting directly from sight. However, she soon found that each intermediary step distanced her further from the raw emotions she sought to capture. Seeking a more immediate and visceral connection, she now paints from instinct and memory, embracing the fluidity and unpredictability of the creative process.

השם AFTERGLOW נלקח מחווייתה של האמנית הצופה בגנים בשעת הדמדומים, כאשר הנוף המוכר הופך לבלתי ידוע. אור היום נסוג, והמרחב המטופח בקפידה הופך לפראי.
"משהו מיוחד מתרחש בגנים כאשר השמש שוקעת. האזור שבו אני עובדת הופך למסוגר ועמום. זה קצת מפחיד, זר ומלהיב בו זמנית. באופן מוזר, הפחד ממריץ אותי. במשך היום, המרחב הזה נמצא בשליטה, מלא באנשים. בלילה הוא מתרוקן ואני הופכת לתיירת בעולם בלתי מוכר. אני משתדלת לנתב את נקודת המבט שלי בציורים – לא על ידי שכפול דימוי יחיד, אלא באמצעות שיקוף האנרגיה החשמלית המוזרה של הרגע".
במסגרת "שהות אמן" של שישה חודשים, הראשונה מסוגה בגן הבוטני בירושלים, הפכה האמנית התל אביבית דיאנה גילון את הגלריה הנמצאת בסמוך לחממה הטרופית, לסטודיו אמנות ולמרחב של דיאלוג.
